Ingested Microplastics in 18 Local Fish Species from the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea

چکیده

Plastic waste and its fragments (microplastics, <5 mm) are a global, persistent, ubiquitous threat for land marine ecosystems. We have investigated the occurrence composition of microplastics within 18 coastal fish species northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Digestive tracts were digested using hydrogen peroxide, residues observed under stereo-microscope. Suspected analyzed with Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometer to confirm plastic nature identify polymer type. A rigorous blank control FTIR correction was applied, leading removal 78% initially sorted suspected particles. Corrected concentrations range from 0.00 5.15 items per fish, result same than this has been reported other previously in area. Fibers, made polyester (PES), polyamide (PA), acrylic (A) polypropylene (PP), largely dominate microplastic shapes (91%). single driving force could not be identified, but several traits (morphology, feeding, habitat) may influence number ingested microplastics.

Spatial Structure and Distribution of Small Pelagic Fish in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea

Understanding the ecological and anthropogenic drivers of population dynamics requires detailed studies on habitat selection and spatial distribution. Although small pelagic fish aggregate in large shoals and usually exhibit important spatial structure, their dynamics in time and space remain unpredictable and challenging. In the Gulf of Lions (north-western Mediterranean), sardine and anchovy ...

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta): A target species for monitoring litter ingested by marine organisms in the Mediterranean Sea.

Marine litter is any persistent, manufactured or processed solid material discarded, disposed of or abandoned in the marine and coastal environment. Ingestion of marine litter can have lethal and sub-lethal effects on wildlife that accidentally ingests it, and sea turtles are particularly susceptible to this threat. The European Commission drafted the 2008/56/EC Marine Strategy Framework Direct...

Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Key Exploited Marine Species in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea

This study analyzes the temporal variability/stability of the spatial distributions of key exploited species in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea). To do so, we analyzed data from the MEDITS bottom-trawl scientific surveys from 1994 to 2010 at 66 fixed stations and selected 12 key exploited species. We proposed a geostatistical approach to handle zero-inflated and non-stationary...

Bile acid binding capacity of fish protein hydrolysates from discard species of the West Mediterranean Sea.

Fish protein hydrolysates (FPH), produced from the six main discard species from the West Mediterranean Sea (sardine, horse mackerel, axillary seabream, bogue, small-spotted catshark and blue whiting) were tested for their bile acid binding capacity. This capacity is directly linked to the ability to inhibit bile reabsorption in the ileum and therefore to lower cholesterol levels in the bloodst...

Improvement of coastal and mesoscale observation from space: Application to the northwestern Mediterranean Sea

[1] We present an innovative approach to the generation of remotely sensed high-resolution sea surface topography that improves coastal and mesoscale dynamic characterization. This new method is applied for the period 2002–2010 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, an area marked by a small Rossby radius. The spectral content of the new mapped data is closer to that of the along-track signal a...
